Installation steps and focused fixes for the most common Google authorization and workbook-conversion problems.

↓

Install the extension

  1. Install Excel to Google Sheets from its Chrome Web Store listing, or use the unpacked build provided by your administrator.
  2. Pin the extension from Chrome's Extensions menu.
  3. Click its toolbar icon, choose a workbook, and approve Google access when prompted.
  4. Keep the small extension window open while processing. The result link opens the converted file in Google Sheets and is viewable without signing in.
403

Google shows 403: access_denied

  • Confirm you selected the Google account authorized to use the app.
  • During private testing, the account must be listed under Google Auth Platform → Audience → Test users.
  • Close the extension window, reload the extension, and try authorization again.
API

Google API request fails

  • Check your internet connection and retry.
  • For development builds, verify that Google Drive API and Google Sheets API are enabled in the OAuth client's project.
  • Confirm the installed extension ID matches the Item ID registered in the Chrome Extension OAuth client.
↔

Old localhost error appears

The current extension does not use localhost:8787. Remove the older backend-based extension, then install or load the current browser-only build.

A formula still needs review

Some Excel functions, external workbook links, VBA macros, Power Query models, and add-in formulas do not have direct Google Sheets equivalents. Check the affected cell and reconnect any required external source manually.

“Ready for your review” identifies remaining cells or compatibility warnings. “Your Sheet was saved” means a later check or public-sharing step failed; use the existing link before retrying, to avoid creating another copy.

CSV or TSV text looks wrong

Use UTF-8, UTF-16 with a byte-order mark, or Windows-1251. Other legacy encodings should be exported as UTF-8 first. TSV uses tabs; CSV also supports commas, semicolons and Excel’s sep= directive. Identifiers with leading zeros, long numbers, phone numbers and ambiguous dates are kept as text. Use XLSX when exact column types matter.

Still need help?

Include the extension version, browser version, file type, and exact error text. Do not send your workbook, Google token, service-account file, OAuth client secret, or DeepSeek API key unless a trusted support representative specifically requests a safe diagnostic sample.
